Why They Matter
Drug discovery is one of the clearest tests of whether Indian biotech can move beyond services and generics into original science. Bugworks matters because antimicrobial resistance and oncology both demand real biology, chemistry, and clinical execution. The timelines are long, and the failure rate is the point of the difficulty.

- $18M Series B1 closed in February 2022, led by Lightrock India
- BWC0977, a novel bacterial topoisomerase inhibitor, advanced through Phase 1 in Adelaide with the single-ascending-dose stage reported safe and well tolerated; CARB-X non-dilutive support since 2017
- GARDP partnership signed in July 2023 with up to $20M of milestone-based support toward Phase 2/3, with GARDP holding rights in 148 countries
- GARDP collaboration expanded in July 2025 to co-develop an oral formulation of BWC0977
- Adenosine-receptor antagonists BWC2094 and BWC2562 presented at the ESMO Immuno-Oncology Congress in December 2023
